Despite being tight and only grudgingly absorbing on smooth pavement, the A4’s ride crumbles on rougher routes. Adaptive dampers are preferable to the complimentary Comfort Dynamic passive system in S line trim for dealing with faster bumps and jolts.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia features a more sensitive steering system, but this car still offers great grip and snappy handling thanks to its well-matched chassis. However, although its incredibly low weight is ideal for navigating city streets, it may be uncomfortable for those who want to go at higher speeds. Despite its quick steering reaction, the A4 appears very flat in comparison to the more engaged and dynamic Giulia.

New gasoline engines for the A4—the 148-horsepower 35 TFSI and the 201-horsepower 40 TFSI—have supplanted the 261-horsepower 45 TFSI, which is no longer manufactured.
