2027 Toyota bZ5X Review, Specs, Performance – Despite being an early user of the current gas-electric hybrid configuration, Toyota’s all-2027 bZ5X is their first effort at an electric-only car. At the time, I tried to keep the unique car in my mind by calling it a flourishing forest. Beyond Zero 4WD is the name given to this crossover. Despite the name, only the two entry-level versions come with what is formally known as “front-wheel drive” (FWD).

Together, we developed this car in partnership with Subaru, makers of the Solterra, a nearly similar model that is available exclusively with all-wheel drive. Price points range from $46,880 for the base L with front-wheel drive to $51,880 for the LE, the trim level we tested in this study. There is already a non-refundable shipping charge of $1,890 included in these tariffs, so any possible tax rebates will not be covered. The XLE variant with all-wheel drive (AWD) costs $56,880. On top of that, a Technology package is available for around $64,640 more. Right present, the bZ5X is only available for purchase in Quebec and British Columbia.

Exterior and Interior

An eight-inch touchscreen, heated mirrors, two-zone automatic climate control, variable intermittent wipers, cloth upholstery, and USB Type A and Type C charging outlets are included on the base version of the bZ5X L. All of these features are included of the standard edition. I upgraded the LE model to include a 12.3-inch center screen instead of the original eight-inch screen. In addition, there were motorized tailgate, heated front seats and the steering wheel, radiant warmers for the lower extremities located beneath the dashboard, and wipers that could detect when it was raining.

Several more features are included as standard equipment in the XLE trim level. Among the several possible features are an auto-dimming mirror, fabric or faux leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and many more. Wheels measuring 20 inches in diameter, advanced parking aid, a driver’s seat with height adjustment, front seats with ventilation, a hands-free tailgate, and the Technology package, an optional upgrade, are all part of this feature.

The bZ5X has a lack of feel, yet it responds fast and accurately to the driver’s steering inputs. Even though it lacks the performance of a sports vehicle, driving it is an exhilarating experience. The distinctive low-mounted battery of electric vehicles improves handling by reducing body roll by lowering the center of gravity. For EVs, this is the typical arrangement. It can do most of those things, which is what you would expect from a daily driver.

You may make the regenerative braking system more powerful by pressing a button on the center console. This means that you may refuel your battery using the energy you save when you slow down. The car slows down somewhat when you let off the accelerator, but it can’t be used for “one-pedal” driving—that is, stopping without using the brake pedal at all—because of its construction. Driving so carelessly is something you should never do. I find it perplexing that the bZ5X does not have this option, as it is available on many other electric vehicles and is appealing to a lot of drivers.

Engine and Performance

In the bZ5X L and bZ5X LE, each front wheel is powered by its own motor. This engine is capable of producing 201 horsepower (150 kW) and 196 pound-feet of torque. One other thing about the L and LE bZ5X models is that they come equipped with a one-speed automatic transmission. The only technical difference between the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Subaru Solterra is the engine outputs, which are 229 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, respectively. There is no competition for the rear-drive-only Kia EV6, thanks to its 225 hp and 320 pound-foot-torque.

On the bZ5X, you can get 214 horsepower and 248 pound-foot torque with the two-motor and all-wheel drive combination. Despite not having the AWD version’s powerful performance, my tester managed to complete all of my objectives. Even while stopped, it can quickly gather speed, reach highway speeds, and bravely pass when needed.

With FWD, the bZ5X can travel 406 kilometers, while with AWD, it can go 367 kilometers. It should come as no surprise that this is highly dependent on factors such as the local climate and the participants’ driving patterns. The gauge’s positive range of 455 kilometers during this era was a relief to behold. This occurred on a bright day after the gauge was charged. I was able to get 360 kilometers out of it before the AC kicked in. When the temperature inside is changed, the range of all electric cars is somewhat reduced. However, the range of an electric car has never decreased to such a degree previously.

Similar two-wheel drive vehicles include the 348-kilometer Nissan Ariya, the 397-kilometer Chevrolet Bolt EUV, the 336-443-kilometer Volkswagen ID.4, and the 373-499-kilometer Kia EV6. These cars can’t be told apart just by looking at their ratings. In city driving, the bZ5X achieves a fuel economy of 1.8 liters per hundred kilometers. In a mixed-mode scenario, it drops to 2.0 liters/100 km, and on the highway, it drops to 2.2 liters/100 km. (Just like the right amount of fuel, it’s measured in liters equivalent, so it’s competitive.)

Despite receiving an impeccable “Good” rating from all IIHS tests, the bZ5X still hadn’t received its NHTSA rating at the time of writing. The side-impact test was updated to more accurately reflect the force of a collision with a bigger SUV. Any way you look at it, a headlamp with a “Poor” grade isn’t up to par with the organization’s top awards.

You can’t buy a new automobile without these characteristics. You won’t find the blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic warning on any trim level other than LE and XLE. Included as standard equipment at this highest model level are two rear emergency brakes.

The base price of a front-wheel drive bZ5X is $51,880, while the price of the L trim level is $46,880. At $56,880 for the XLE and $64,640 for the XLE Technology, you get two all-wheel drive (AWD) trim options. The Subaru, a sister brand of Toyota vehicles, is priced between $56,290 and $64,090 for the base all-wheel drive model.

The Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV6, and Nissan Ariya all have beginning pricing of around $49,000, $49,995, and $52,500, respectively. To get a two-wheel drive car at a reasonable price, think about the Chevrolet Bolt EUV. Unless otherwise noted, these prices do cover delivery but do not account for any possible incentives. As I relaxed in my test car, I failed to notice that I was at the wheel of an electric vehicle that cost about $52,000. The 2027 Toyota bZ5X is reasonably priced compared to other models in its class, even though electric cars often have a higher sticker price. When you’re ready to hit the road, consider Toyota’s first all-electric model.
