2026 Peugeot 408 Redesign, Specs, Dimensions
2026 Peugeot 408 Redesign, Specs, Dimensions – For some, hearing about Peugeot’s new 408 sedan brought back fond memories of the D-segment’s golden age, when beloved cars such as the Passat, Vectra, and Mondeo were on sale. Part of the reason the 2004 407 is best left in the past is because it had a hideous face that nobody loved except its mother. Customer interest had waned at that point. Peugeot turned a profit with the 408, defying industry trends despite falling sales of traditionally large family cars.
This is what Peugeot refers to as a “C-segment fastback.” It is Peugeot’s latest attempt at a big family car, and it combines elements of the 308 hatchback, 3008 SUV, and 508 to fill a gap between those three models. With a longer wheelbase and longer overall length, the 408 offers greater internal room than the 308 SW Estate. The electric Polestar 2 and Kia EV6, which are also big contemporary fastbacks, are comparable to it in appearance, with their steeply sloping rooflines. Another member of the Stellantis family, the Citroen C5 X, offers similar features. 2026 Peugeot 408 Redesign

2026 Peugeot 408 Redesign and Update Plan
Exterior & Interior
The design team at Peugeot has recently done some excellent work. Peugeot, a French carmaker that had a spell of looking ordinary, if not ugly, has been thrust back into the limelight with models like the 208 and 508.
When compared to other contemporary Peugeot vehicles, the 408’s boldness is endearing. We wouldn’t call it beautiful, but its distinctive folds that go down its sides and around its wings set it apart. Also included are the daytime running lights that resemble fangs and the instantly recognizable Peugeot snout. A deeper shade of paint might be a good choice if you’re not a fan of the plastic covering around the wheelarches and sills.
Just as stunning as the outside is the inside of the 2026 Peugeot 408. The high-quality and trendy design is enhanced by the abundance of soft-touch polymers. Our test car looked and felt even more luxurious with the Blue Naboo leather seats, which are an option for GT cars’ Driver and Passenger packages. The 408’s plastic underside and air vents reduce legroom for the front passenger, yet the combination of the vents with the elegant row of slats that spans the dashboard is beautiful.
Every model, with the exception of the top-tier, has the compact i-Cockpit steering wheel and digital instrument cluster as standard equipment. The 3D displays in the GT vehicles make some parts of the screen stand out more. In spite of its sleek design, not all screen resolutions provide legible data. For example, due to its diminutive size, we had to enlarge the car’s speedometer. You may tailor it to your needs with a lot of flexibility, and it may get better with time.
The Peugeot i-Connect Advanced touchscreen, measuring 10.25 inches, is located dead center in the cabin. On each side of it, you’ll find a bank of programmable shortcut buttons and a row of physical toggle switches. Integrating speed cameras, TomTom Live traffic, and three years of free navigation updates are standard on the Allure and higher trim levels.
The visuals are quite stunning, especially on a very high-resolution widescreen television with smooth borders. Even if the route planning and answers are fast enough, Peugeot still has you walk through menus to choose stuff like radio stations. Finding the necessary option is made more challenging by the system’s rapid scrolling.
Peugeot should be commended for including a physical volume control knob in their device, even though the ‘i-Toggle’ shortcut buttons may be customized to make your often used functions easily accessible. The displays and controls are located far back, so drivers who are taller or who sit further from the dashboard may have to bend forward to access them.
The ability to wirelessly connect two phones over Bluetooth with Apple Carplay or Android Auto is available, and digital audio broadcasting (DAB) radio is standard on all models. It is convenient to have four USB charging ports. An optional 10-speaker Focal high-fidelity audio system is available on the highest GT model level. We are really considering purchasing the Cielo panoramic sunroof and the wireless charging pad, two additional accessories. 2026 Peugeot 408 Redesign
2026 Peugeot 408 Specs
Engine & Performance
Peugeot made sure the 408’s comfortable ride and quick acceleration were there despite the coupe-like body. Each and every one of the Peugeot EAT’s trim levels comes standard with the eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
Since the rim of the small i-Cockpit steering wheel obscures the instruments for drivers with a larger stature, opinions on it remain mixed. Your personal dimensions and preferred driving posture will have a considerable influence on how you see it and those instruments. The majority of passengers should have no trouble finding a comfortable position thanks to the adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel.
Feeling swift and thin without revealing the wheels’ intentions, the 408 is equipped with a downscale wheel and light, insensitive steering. An on-wheel button gives you access to three pre-programmed driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. By shifting to Sport, you may get a bit faster throttle response and shifts from the eight-speed automatic gearbox. On top of that, plug-in variants come with electric and hybrid modes.
This Peugeot has a MacPherson strut up front and a twist beam axle in the back, so the ride and handling will depend on the engine you choose with. Reason being, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) versions are, unsurprisingly, more heavier than regular electric vehicles—over 300 kg to be exact.
Our testing revealed that the 1,392 kg PureTech petrol model, in contrast to the 1,696 kg Hybrid 180, had better road holding and sufficient resistance to body roll in corners and during rapid changes of direction. While the ride was silky smooth on the freeway, the 19-inch wheels made the suspension clack and feel awkward on occasionally bumpy town roads.
This might be improved with smaller wheels. While cruising around those terrible city streets at lesser speeds, we noticed that the plug-in hybrid vehicles had a bit more body roll while cornering and a generally bumpier ride. However, when the mood strikes, the 2026 Peugeot 408 delivers moments of pure bliss on top of enough refinement and comfort for a pleasant journey.
Turning the crankshaft to 1,750 rpm, the base Puretech gasoline engine produces 129 horsepower and 230 Newton-meters of torque. You may be sure that this little car will sell like hotcakes thanks to its 130 mph peak speed and 10.4 second zero-to-62 mph performance.
When you ask for more acceleration, the EAT gearbox shifts down a gear or two, which increases the revs and noise without really increasing the acceleration. At low rpm, it stays quiet. Although the Puretech engine isn’t very noisy, you shouldn’t use excessive left-foot pressure if you want to achieve sluggish but respectable pace.
Although the Hybrid 225 and 180 are quicker, the gearbox, called e-EAT in this context, isn’t quite state-of-the-art. When switching from electric to gas, it doesn’t always go well.
Although it’s an improvement over the 178-horsepower Hybrid 180, the 222-horsepower Hybrid 225 doesn’t provide much more. Both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are identical in every way. Both are capable of speeds of up to 140 mph, have a maximum torque of 266 Nm, and can go from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in less than eight and seven and a half seconds, respectively. 2026 Peugeot 408 Redesign
2026 Peugeot 408 Fuel Economy
As is usual for plug-in hybrids, the 2026 Peugeot 408 PHEVs display exceptional fuel economy in the official WLTP combined cycle tests. One would have to follow an almost religious charging regimen to get 215mpg in the Hybrid 180 and 211mpg in the Hybrid225, respectively. The CO₂ emissions rating of 24-30 g/km should help keep the business car tax bills in check.
Based on official mixed cycle testing, PureTech fuel achieves 41-48mpg and 133-156g/km. The standard stop/start system and the 408’s aerodynamic design both have a role in this. A gasoline engine (1.6 liters), an electric motor (109 horsepower), and a lithium-ion battery (12.4 kWh) are all combined in both variants, making them hybrids. Our research has shown that a range closer to 25 miles would be more feasible in real life, despite their promised range of roughly 40 miles when propelled exclusively by electricity.
The included 3.7kW charger can fully recharge the batteries of a typical 7.4kW residential wallbox in 3 hours and fifty minutes. However, with the 7.4kW on-board charger, you may achieve the same result in 1 hour and 55 minutes.
2026 Peugeot 408 Safety Features
Although the 2022 Peugeot 308 hatchback was evaluated by Euro NCAP and awarded a four-star safety rating, the 2026 Peugeot 408 has not been tested at this time. The family hatchback had a 65% safety aid score, an 84% protection rating for children, and a 78% protection rating for adults.
Every model comes standard with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including front, side, and curtain airbags, lane-keeping assist, emergency braking support, the ability to recognize traffic signals, and more. While traveling at modest speeds, hybrids do make a noise to alert pedestrians of approaching danger, even though the decibel level is often low. Advanced emergency braking systems based on radar and cameras are included on all Allure models, with adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic warning available on the Premium trim. A lane-position assist feature is available on the GT, which can help keep the car centered in its lane automatically.
There is insufficient data to make any reliability judgments for the 408, as it was not included in our Driver Power owner satisfaction survey until 2022. Conversely, Peugeot has been performing admirably in the manufacturing rankings, and they were rated #4 in 2022. Peugeots were ranked in the top ten by its owners due to the brand’s exceptional design, responsive handling, and overall reliability. The fact that Peugeot dealers ranked third overall is a positive development for the brand.
